Research Funding Opportunities

There are opportunities to apply for external funding to help support research projects. Students who are interested in an applied research project may be interested in applying to MITACS, which offers funding for research internships. There are also scholarships available for students to travel and conduct research elsewhere.

MITACS. A grad student, a supervising professor, and a partner organization develop a
research project. Applicants submit a proposal via a Mitacs representative.
Projects receive $15,000 in funding for each four-month internship.

Government of Canada Scholarships. International scholarship opportunities are available for the best and brightest Canadian students and researchers to study and conduct research abroad. There is a database by country of destination to find scholarships, fellowships or funding opportunities made available by Global Affairs Canada and other Canadian federal government departments.

For students who are interested in pursuing research-oriented graduate studies, there are funding opportunities through the federal government’s Tri-Council Agencies, which provide scholarships to graduate students in the social sciences and humanities (through SSHRC), natural sciences and engineering (through NSERC), and in health research (through CIHR).
