Bereavement notice ~ Jerry Orban
With great sadness we share the news of the passing of our friend and colleague Jerry Orban, a valued member of the Faculty of Education for the past 15 years.
A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Living Hope Alliance Church (3900 Arcola Ave. East) on Wednesday, Jan 9, 2019. A private family interment will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, Jerry’s family would be grateful for a donation to the University of Regina Ram’s Scholarship fund in Jerry’s name. Or if you prefer, you may bring a new blanket to the service so that the family can distribute to the patients of the Allan Blair Cancer Center in Jerry’s honour.
Forever In Our Hearts
It is with unbearable heartache the Orban family announces the passing of Jerome ‘Jerry’ Andrew Orban on Friday, January 4, 2019 at the age of 68 years.
Jerry was born in Lestock, SK on November 11, 1950 and his family moved to Regina, when he was three.
He lived in Regina for most of his life with the exception of one year in Vancouver when he attended and played university football at Simon Fraser. He graduated with a degree in Education and spent his entire working life as a teacher or administrator in the Regina Public School system.
For the last 15 years he was the Faculty of Education Field Placement Manager at the University of Regina. He retired from the U of R in September, 2018. His 45 year career as an educator was the profession he truly loved. … Read more

Rams legend Jerry Orban dies at 68
Jerry Orban, who was as popular as he was successful during a long association with the Regina Rams junior and university football programs, died of cancer on Friday. He was 68.
Orban was a “coach, teacher, mentor, friend” in the words of University of Regina Rams head coach Steve Bryce.
“Jerry was a second father to hundreds of football players,” added Bryce, who was coached by Orban from 1987 to 1991. “Jerry earned the respect and admiration of not only his position players, but other position players and even opponents.” Read more

New book published on teaching in challenging social contexts
Written by our dean, Dr. Jerome Cranston, for practicing teachers and administrators, teacher candidates, and scholars who work in the fields of pre-service and in-service teacher education, Beyond the Classroom Walls: Teaching in Challenging Social Contexts provides a richly descriptive, research-based inside-look at formal education in some challenging international socio-political and ethno-cultural settings. Based on data from three ethnographic studies conducted over a three-year period, this book illustrates the daily challenges and complexities that educators face in trying to meet the needs of their students in some the world’s more challenging contexts. In an era of increased forced migration and refugee resettlement, supporting teachers’ and school-based administrators’ global understandings of the teaching profession and what constitutes teaching is a vital first step in being able to relate with a diverse school population whose experiences of schooling are quite different from the majority of their teachers.

Education students participate in Re-Imagine Education with STF Executives
In November 2018, the STF Senior Administrative and Executive staff visited the U of R to deliver a Re-Imagine Education workshop to Instructor Julie Machnaik’s pre-intern students. ESS President Laura Bieber made the arrangements to have the workshop presented. STF Administrator Withman Jaigobin said that it isn’t typical for the STF to deliver the workshops, and especially not typical for the STF Executive and Administrative staff to deliver the workshop. This was a special occasion. STF staff presenting the workshop also included President Patrick Maze and Debbie Ward. Following the workshop, students were invited to a focus group with Communications Officer Shuana Niessen to talk about their visions for the future of education. STF staff demonstrated their interest in hearing from students about the future of Education. Students really appreciated the chance for their views of education to be heard.
Education Students’ Society President Laura Bieber speaks about her involvement in bringing the STF Re-Imagine session to the U of R.
STF President Patrick Maze explains the idea behind bringing the Re-Imagine Education initiative to Education students at the U of R.
