Associate Professor – Language and Literacy Education – retired June 30, 2020 after 21 years in the Faculty of Education
On June 30, 2020, Valerie Mulholland is retiring after 21 years in the Faculty of Education. Her affiliation with the faculty extends to the 1980s; over the years she was a student, sessional instructor, seconded teacher, and finally an Associate Professor in English Education. For six years she served as the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs and Student Services, a role that required both a new perspective and a new set of skills, a good way to finish a career in Education. In July, she begins a two-year term on the Board of Directors of the Museums Association of Saskatchewan, launching the next phase of life, being an enthusiastic community volunteer. Val is grateful for the opportunities she enjoyed at the University of Regina and wishes the best for her former colleagues. Teacher education is important work, and she is glad to have played a part.

Dr. Michael Tymchak (Dean 1992-2000; Acting Dean 2006-2008) retired in 2012.
Dr. Tymchak started his career at the U of R in 1969 as an instructor in the Philosophy Department. In 1984, he moved to the Faculty of Education to teach and serve as the Director of the Northern Teacher Education Program [NORTEP]. Several years later, Dr. Tymchak served as the Dean of the Faculty of Education (1992 – 2000) and Acting Dean (2006 – 2008). He helped found the University’s first Teaching Development Center in 1996 and served as the Director of the Saskatchewan Instructional development and Research Unit (SIDRU).

Ormond Knight McKague: Following the completion of graduate work, he moved to university teaching in Regina and Saskatoon, and finally to Winnipeg, where his last position was that of director of the Winnipeg Education Centre, which prepared teachers for work in multicultural, inner-city schools. When he returned to Regina in the mid-1990’s, he became involved with a number of civic and social-issue organizations. McKague passed away June 5, 2017

Dr. John Schaller
John Schaller taught social studies in New York State (Grades 6-12) before joining the Faculty of Education, University of Regina in 1969. By 1971, he and Dr. Joe Kalla were instrumental in setting up the teacher training experience at the Faculty. This involved a three-day Fall and three-day Winter outdoor experience held at Fort San. He often assisted teaching the Winter Outdoor Education class at the University of Regina. In addition, he was involved with Churchill River canoe trips, studies at Stanley Mission, and field trips to Hutterite colonies and Reserves. John passed away in 2014 at age 87.

Dr. Norm Kuhns retired in June 2010 after a long career at the U of R. In his 3rd year of tenure, he became the Associate Director of Counselling Services where his time was shared until he returned to the Faculty in 1994 on a full-time basis. Norm passed away in 2014.

Dr. Hellmut Lang taught in the Faculty Education, from 1970 to 1998 and taught subsequent years in SUNTEP. Educating was his ultimate passion. He had a special interest in First Nations education and twice received the Order of the Sash for his contribution to Metis education.

Pat Duffy Hutcheon was a faculty member during the transition from the Normal School to the Faculty of Education at the University (1968-1973). Hutcheon passed away Thursday February 4, 2010 at the St. James Hospice in Vancouver.

Joe had a lifelong career in education as a teacher and an administrator. For a period of time he was a professor at the University of Saskatchewan, Regina, Canada. Joe Kalla, Sioux Falls, SD, longtime education administrator, died May 30, 2007, at Good Samaritan Village. He was 73 years old.

Dr. Evelina Orteza (PhD in Philosophy) was hired 1966. Dr Orteza passed away on July 26, 2014.
“And then there was the intelligent young Evelina Orteza from the Philippines, who had recently graduated with a PHD in Philosophy from an American university. She had arrived just the year before. She and I were interested in many of the same ideas, and became close friends almost immediately. From the first week of my arrival, we began to spend much of our time during coffee breaks and lunch hours in the faculty lounge, engaged in deep theoretical discussions. Evelina also got into the habit of coming over to our house in the evenings, along with Bernie.
