Doing Research: Focus Groups

This interactive workshop will provide you with an overview of the role of research in your work with attention to focus groups as a research tool: what they are, why you might conduct one, how to analyse data, and the advantages and disadvantages of the method. Participants will learn what sort of qualitative data can be gathered through focus groups and how to analyse and use it. Through interactive small-group activities, participants will apply the knowledge gained in the session and get hands-on experience with the method.
Facilitator Michelle Stewart is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Justice Studies where she teaches in the area of social justice and research methods. Her current research investigates how Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is understood in different groups that work on or are engaged with FASD. Michelle is also the Director of the Community Research Unit. She is dedicated to community-engaged and publicly-available scholarship.Doors open at 8:10 a.m., and the workshop will begin at 8:30.
