Dr. Katya Herman joined the Faculty of Kinesiology & Health Studies at the University of Regina in 2013. Her academic background includes a BSc in Biochemistry (McMaster), MSc in Community Health and Epidemiology (Saskatchewan), PhD in Kinesiology and Health Studies (Physical Activity Epidemiology) (Queen’s), and Postdoctoral Fellowships in Epidemiology and in Kinesiology (McGill). Dr. Herman’s research interests are focused around physical activity, sedentary behaviour and obesity epidemiology. Her research has covered the lifespan from children to adults to older adults, examining the inter-relationships between physical activity, sedentary behaviour and obesity, and associations with both health-related quality of life and cardiometabolicnoutcomes. Dr. Herman is a member of the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology, the International Society for Physical Activity and Health, the Sedentary Behaviour Research Network, and the Canadian Obesity Network. She is a former national team athlete in rowing, and continues to row for fun and fitness, while also a level 3 certified coach. Other interests include travel and home decorating and renovations.

Michelle joined the PA-Epi Lab in 2014, and is completing her masters working on a systematic review and meta-analysis investigating smoking as a cause of multiple sclerosis. She also published a paper looking at immigrant status and having a family physician in Canada. Michelle will be seeking employment in the health field and is considering pursuing a PhD in the future. In her spare time, Michelle enjoys spending quality time with friends and family, travelling, and participating in a variety of sports and outdoor activities.

Research Assistants

Kayla joined the PA-Epi Lab in the summer of 2016 as a research assistant for the SeasonActiv study. She is currently in her final year of a 2nd undergraduate degree, hoping to gain admission to medical school. Kayla aspires to eventually moving to a small town in Northern Saskatchewan, providing medical care in an under-served community. In her spare time Kayla enjoys camping, fishing and spending time outside with her dogs.

Saria joined to PA-Epi Lab in the summer of 2016, as a research assistant with the Stand-Up UofR study and also volunteering with the SeasonActiv study. She is currently in her 3rd year of Health Studies, seeking early experience in health research after having taken the KIN 381 Intro to Epicourse. In her spare time Saria enjoys reading, travelling, going on walks with her cat and working at Ricki’s.

Eman completed her undergraduate honours thesis in the PA-Epi Lab in 2015-16, investigating the association between sedentary behaviour and mental health in undergraduate Kinesiology Students. Eman hopes to gain admission to medical school upon completion of her degree.
