September 2006

Shardelle Brown commenced as the CPHR Training Program Coordinator on September 15. Shardelle works from the SPHERU/CPHR office at the University of Saskatchewan.

October 2006

Lauren Sherar was awarded a CPHR Training Program Internship for the investigation of the relationship between socioeconomic status and maturity related barriers to physical activity (doctoral research). For further information on Lauren's research, please read her Internship Summary.

November 2006

Dr. Nazeem Muhajarine, Co-Principal Investigator of the CPHR Training Program, received the CIHR Knowledge Translation Award recognizing excellence in knowledge translation for his work on how the social contexts in which children live - their families and their neighbourhood - help or hinder them in their early years.

December 2006

Katrina Plamondon completed the CPHR Training Program and successfully defended her Master's thesis. Congratulations!

January 2007

The annual CPHR Training Program progress report was submitted to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).

Dr. George Maslany, Co-Principal Investigator of the CPHR Training Program, was named Acting Vice-President (Academic) at the University of Regina effective January 1.

March 2007

Dr. Bonnie Jeffery, Director of SPHERU and Professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Regina, replaced Dr. George Maslany as Co-Principal Investigator of the CPHR Training Program and member of the Program Advisory Committee.

April 2007

The CPHR Training Program announced a new funding opportunity for Strategic Training Fellows. A Travel Fund has been established to support conference travel expenses for those STFs who are presenting a paper or poster at a conference or scientific meeting.

May 2007

Kori Fisher was awarded a CPHR Training Program Internship for the investigation of whether the implementation of the in-motion strategy has resulted in changes in health service utilization among older adults in Saskatoon (doctoral research). Gloria DeSantis was awarded a STF Travel Fund to present her paper entitled, The Power to Change? Community-based Advocacy through a Well-being Lens to colleagues at the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) World Conference in Vancouver, BC in June 2007.

June 2007

Angela Bowen received the Gold Poster Award in the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) National Research Poster Competition at the Canadian Student Health Research Forum (CSHRF) in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Along with the Gold Poster Award is a monetary award of $500 which Angela is donating to the Maternal Mental Health Program in the Saskatoon Health Region. This program follows a shared care model of mental health provision to preconception, pregnant and postpartum women and provides education to Family Medicine Residents.

Kristal Anderson was awarded a STF Travel Fund to present her poster entitled, Body Composition, Diet and Physical Activity Patterns in Aboriginal Youth to colleagues at the International Conference on Physical Activity and Obesity in Children in Toronto, ON in June 2007.

July 2007

Angela Bowen completed the CPHR Training Program and successfully defended her doctoral research. Congratulations! Angela is now an Assistant Professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Saskatchewan.

August 2007

Lesley McLeod completed the CPHR Training Program and successfully defended her Master's thesis. Congratulations!

Janelle Hippe completed the CPHR Training Program and successfully defended her Master's thesis. Congratulations! Janelle will begin her doctoral studies at Queen's University in September 2007 investigating the social-structural dimensions of the spread of HIV among women in Canada.

September 2007

Angela Bowen was awarded a STF Travel Fund to present her papers entitled, Antenatal depression: In women on the edge of or at 'risk,' and Women on the edge: Leading perinatal mental health care to colleagues at the Association of Women's Health, Obstetrical and Neonatal Nursing Conference in Halifax, NS in October 2007.

Kelly Chessie (U of S) and Randy Johner (U of R) were elected as the 2007/2008 trainee representatives on the Program Advisory Committee.

October 2007

Helen Oliver completed the CPHR Training Program and successfully defended her Master's thesis. Congratulations!

Marta Erlandson was awarded a STF Travel Fund to present her paper entitled, The effects of gymnastics training on early childhood (4-6 years) body composition to colleagues at the Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology Annual Scientific Conference in London, ON in November 2007.

November 2007

Dr. Michael MacLean, Professor in the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Regina, replaced Dr. David Malloy as the U of R representative on the Program Advisory Committee.

Dr. Joseph Garcea, Associate Professor in the Department of Political Studies at the University of Saskatchewan, replaced Dr. Harley Dickinson as the U of S representative on the Program Advisory Committee.

April 2008

The Letter of Intent was submitted to the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) for renewal of the CPHR Training Program to its Strategic Training Initiative in Health Research (STIHR) program. The new program builds on the strengths and lessons learned from the current training program and is entitled, Research, Evaluation, Education and Community Health: In Aboriginal, Northern, Rural and Children's Population Health. If successful at this stage, full applications are due November 3, 2008.

Kelly Chessie was awarded a STF Travel Fund to present her paper entitled, Shifting medicare governance models: iterations and implications of Saskatchewan public policy to colleagues at the Making Connections for Health - Canadian Medical Sociology Association conference in Montreal, Quebec in May 2008.

May 2008

Hang Lai was awarded a STF Travel Fund to present her paper entitled, A longitudinal analysis of physical activity and overweight/obesity in adolescents in Saskatoon to colleagues at the Canadian Public Health Association 2008 Annual Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia in June 2008.

Ryan Wright was awarded a STF Travel Fund to present his paper entitled, The role of a Sport for Development project on community capacity building in a refugee camp setting to colleagues at the 14th Annual International Sustainable Development Research Conference in New Delhi, India in September 2008.
