Her daughter-in-law noted: “Their clothing, the way they travelled, it was there on the paper. She drew exactly how the Inuit lived in the old days.” Pitseolak recognised that the rapidly-changing life she remembered could continue via her art. Drawing both from memory and imagination, she filled the paper with far-reaching themes: her childhood, family life, games, imagination, and experiences as an artist. The moment of fantastic flight in Young Woman and Owl includes the bright colours of felt pens, her favoured medium. Pitseolak’s trademark depictions of women’s braided hair and clothing derive, perhaps, from her domestic activities, where her eye for detail was honed in the many beautiful clothes she made, much to the envy of her neighbours.

(la gauche) Pitseolak Ashoona
Canadienne (Inuite) (a vécu à Cape Dorset (Kinngait), T.N.-O.) 1904-1983
Graveur: Eegyvudluk Pootoogook (1931-2000)
Jeune femme et hibou (27/50), 1979
Gravure sur pierre et pochoir sur papier
Collection d’art du recteur de l’Université de Regina, donation Shumiatcher.
