{"id":504,"date":"2016-11-30T19:56:59","date_gmt":"2016-12-01T01:56:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www2.uregina.ca\/khs\/pa-epi-lab\/?page_id=504"},"modified":"2016-12-05T17:52:30","modified_gmt":"2016-12-05T23:52:30","slug":"teaching-philosophy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www2.uregina.ca\/khs\/pa-epi-lab\/teaching-philosophy\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Philosophy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a id=\"logokhs\" href=\"http:\/\/www.uregina.ca\/kinesiology\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www2.uregina.ca\/khs\/pa-epi-lab\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Kinesiology.png\" alt=\"Kinesiology\" width=\"230\" height=\"60\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m passionate about what I teach and research &#8212; and I hope to inspire that same enthusiasm in my students! \u00a0At face-value, a teacher\u2019s job is to help a student develop and improve their academic knowledge and performance.\u00a0 But a teacher can also help define a student\u2019s entire educational experience.\u00a0 This experience should be inspiring, meaningful, practical \u2013 and Fun!<\/p>\n<p>I believe it\u2019s important to create courses that are challenging (not going to lie, my courses aren\u2019t \u201ceasy\u201d!).\u00a0 But I also try to keep them interesting and relevant, so that students are eager to learn, apply and extend their knowledge.\u00a0 It\u2019s great to see students start to believe in themselves and their abilities, through a commitment to hard work and excellence. \u00a0Not everyone will develop interest in a subject (sometimes discovering non-interest in a subject can be just as valuable!) but I hope all students complete a course feeling they learned something worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>The most important things learned in University are not the content, facts and figures from lectures and text books \u2013 those can easily be looked up if forgotten. But communication, critical thinking, problem solving, building an argument, effective information gathering \u2013 you can&#8217;t look those up on\u00a0Google or Wikipedia.<\/p>\n<p>I promote high standards for oral and written work, with the belief that any research or academic work is only as good as your ability to communicate it to others. I try to challenge students to think independently, to take ideas and connect them to prior knowledge and extend them to create knew knowledge.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll gain the confidence to participate, appreciating the value of being challenged and risking incorrect answers. \u00a0Rather than simply accepting information, the value of always asking and trying to understand \u201cwhy\u201d cannot be underestimated.\u00a0 It\u2019s so important for you to gain the confidence to formulate and defend your own ideas and opinions, even in the face of challenges.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll develop a greater capacity for independent thought, making a personal investment in your learning and taking more ownership of your newly acquired knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>As a teacher I can impact I can a student\u2019s life and their learning experiences. I love watching students progress and evolve as people, from the first months of undergraduate uncertainty progressing towards graduation, or from a first time researcher to a confident graduate student, and knowing that I\u2019ve helped inspire something within.\u00a0 I hope to positively impact and inspire many students\u2019 lives over the course of my teaching career.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u201cTeaching is more than imparting knowledge, it is inspiring change.<br \/>\n<\/em><em>Learning is more than absorbing facts, it is acquiring understanding.\u201d<br \/>\n<\/em>&#8211; William Arthur Ward<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I\u2019m passionate about what I teach and research &#8212; and I hope to inspire that same enthusiasm in my students!
