2 new Graduate Scholarship Initiatives

The Faculty of Graduate Studies is pleased to announce two new programs that will help faculties attract high calibre graduate students for Fall 2014.

First, is the Graduate Research Fellowship (GRF) program. At the PhD level, these are worth $25,092 and at the Master’s level, they are worth $20,854. The funding includes the following:
• FGSR funding – $10,000 PhD; $8,000 Master’s
• Supervisor funding – $10,000 PhD; $8,000 Master’s
• Minimum 1 TA, Maximum 2 TAs – i.e, max of $5,092 PhD; $4,854 Master’s

GRFs are for new, thesis-based graduate students only. Line faculties can nominate up to 3 PhD and 3 Master’s students for the first competition. The nomination packages will be evaluated by the FGSR Scholarships and Awards Committee.

The second program is the Saskatchewan Innovation Entrance Scholarship*. These scholarships are for new students only. They are worth up to $14,000 and will be paid over the Fall 2014 and Winter 2015 semesters. Each line faculty can nominate 2 PhD and 2 Master’s students for these awards.
[*the Saskatchewan Innovation Entrance Scholarship is a separate competition from the general Saskatchewan Innovation Competition. There will still be a general Saskatchewan Innovation competition that will be held in Fall 2014 for all students. Once the date is set for this competition FGSR will notify all departments and students.]

Please find attached the nomination forms and terms of reference for both the GRF and Saskatchewan Innovation programs. The terms of reference will provide further information on how both of these programs will work.

The deadline for nominations will be April 15, 2014.

TIRF’s Doctoral Dissertaton Grants in Canada

TIRF — The International Research Foundation for English Language Education – is pleased to announce its 2014 Doctoral Dissertation Grants competition. Grants of up to US $5,000 will be made to successful applicants investigating any of the following topics:

·Bilingualism or Plurilingualism in Business, Industry, and the Professions
·Language Assessment
·Optimal Uses of Technology in the Delivery of English Language Instruction
·Language Teacher Education
·Students’ Age and Effective English Language Education in Schools
·Language Policy and Planning

Applicants must be enrolled in a legitimate doctoral program and must have been advanced to candidacy. (That is, they must have completed any required coursework and/or examinations, and must have had their research plan official approved by the university.)

SIDRU Research Fund Competition

This is a call to the Faculty of Education for applications to the Annual SIDRU Research Fund Competition. These funds are adjudicated and awarded to research exploring theory and practice in three broad areas: Field Experience and Professional Development, Partnerships and Community-Based Projects, and the “General” Fund.

It is expected that 3 applications, one from each category, will be awarded a modest maximum of $3,500 each.

Assessment will be based on the soundness of the research methodology, the reasonableness of the timeline proposed and the appropriateness of the proposed budget and the merit of the research topic.

A complete application will include a summary paragraph, a project description, a budget, and a proposed timeline. Applications should be submitted electronically and sent to James.McNinch@uregina.ca

DEADLINE for applications is January 10, 2014. Successful applicants will be notified by January 24, 2014.

SSHRC Insight Development Grants WEBINAR

SSHRC will be holding three webinars on the upcoming Insight Development Grants 2014 competition and the changes to the application portal, including the SSHRC Canadian Common CV.

The Office of Research, Innovation and Partnership will be hosting two webinars:
Thursday, Dec 5th, 12:30-2:30 in RIC 314; and
Friday, Dec 6th, 12:30-2:30 in LB 237

Insight Development Grants provide support of up to $75,000 over one to two years to build knowledge and understanding about people, societies and the world by supporting research in its initial stages, in all subject areas eligible for funding from SSHRC.
