Population health
research seeks to better understand health determinants embedded in our
social, economic and political systems. The CPHR Training Program
facilitates an interdisciplinary approach to population health research with
over thirty (30) different researchers and scholars from thirteen (13)
disciplines, joined by nationally and internationally renowned guest
lecturers, who mentor trainees in new ways of framing research questions,
applying research methodologies and disseminating research knowledge to
influence public policies.
Interdisciplinary population health research is promoted through:
-
STF thesis/dissertation committees which are to include: at least one
SPHERU faculty member as a supervisor, co-supervisor or simply a committee
member; at least two disciplines/departments; and wherever possible and
relevant, faculty from both universities in Saskatchewan.
- STF
research proposals which must indicate how they have been influenced
by, and/or contribute to, specific discipline theories or methodological
approaches from beyond their own cognate department.
- Training Program
curriculum with a focus on interdisciplinary research, provided through
the core course (CH&EP 898.3 Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Population
Health), STF presentations
where they discuss their research proposals in an interdisciplinary
setting, and additional discussion time (via presentations/seminars by
visiting scholars) aimed at increasing an
understanding of how different disciplines might conceptualize or research
similar or related population health questions.
