[*the Saskatchewan Innovation Entrance Scholarship is a separate competition from the general Saskatchewan Innovation Competition. There will still be a general Saskatchewan Innovation competition that will be held in Fall 2014 for all students. Once the date is set for this competition FGSR will notify all departments and students.]

Please find attached the nomination forms and terms of reference for both the GRF and Saskatchewan Innovation programs. The terms of reference will provide further information on how both of these programs will work.

EdCampYQR – Professional Development Opportunity – Saturday, April 5, 2014

Monday, March 24th, 2014

EDCAMPYQR – PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITY

#EdCampYQR – Professional Development Opportunity – Saturday, April 5,
2014

9:00 am – 12:00 p.m. @ Campus Regina Public

EdTech and more!

We are pleased to host another engaging PD opportunity for Regina and
area educators (teachers, staff, administrators, librarians,
consultants, educational assistants… all are welcome!). On Saturday,
April 5th, from 9:00 am – 12:00 p.m. , teachers and staff from K-12 and
beyond are invited to join colleagues from multiple school divisions at
Campus Regina Public (formerly Cochrane High School). This self-directed
professional development opportunity allows educators from all grade
levels and areas of expertise to come together in a series of targeted
discussions and sessions around areas of interest. While the focus may
be on the use of educational technology, the conversations will evolve
to support you in what you need in your role.

An “edcamp” is a professional development opportunity unlike any other;
it’s an “unconference” where the sessions are decided the day of the
event, driven by participant interest and need. Anyone can present and
anyone can lead a discussion. Participants are encouraged to bring
something to share – a tool, a trick, something that has worked for you
in the classroom, or may choose to lead a session around a content area
or around an area related to teaching / instructional practice. We
encourage you to follow the “law of two feet” – if the session doesn’t
meet your needs, get up and move to a session that does. Better yet,
lead a session around an area that you are comfortable with or even
start a conversations about something you want to learn more about!

Last year’s #EdCamp received rave reviews as participants left pleased
with the PD that is given by educators, for educators. Be a part of this
amazing opportunity that will allow you do what you do best.

For more information, and to REGISTER FOR FREE, please access the
conference blog at http://edcampyqr.wordpress.com
, and follow all updates on twitter
@EdCampYQR. We can also be found on facebook at
https://facebook.com/edcampyqr .

Feel free to Bring Your Own Technology (BYOT).

Please note that your attendance at EdCampYQR is optional…but we would
really appreciate people pre-registering if possible through the blog.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning for a workshop on Teaching Large Classrooms on Wednesday March 12, 2:00-4:00, LY 610 (6th floor, Archer Library)

Workshop: Teaching Large Classrooms

The Centre for Teaching and Learning for a workshop on Teaching Large Classrooms on Wednesday March 12, 2:00-4:00, LY 610 (6th floor, Archer Library). To RSVP, please see http://www.uregina.ca/ctl/events/2014/03/Teaching-Large-Classrooms.html

Join Stephen Cheng and Harold Weger to discuss the challenges and rewards of teaching large classes.

Many first year classes have a hundred or more students. Teaching these large classes with students fresh from high schools can be very challenging. Many of these students are still in transition from high school and they lack the learning skills for university level courses. For some students, they find large classes intimidating and impersonal. However, these classes provide the foundation for a successful university career. As a result, overcoming the challenges of teaching large classes will greatly reward instructors and students.
There is no one-size-fits-all strategy for teaching large classes because every discipline is unique and every instructor has his/her own strength. Having said that, many tricks of teaching large classes are universal. In this interactive workshop, you will experience the challenges and rewards of delivering effective and engaging lectures to large classes.
Stephen Cheng is a lecturer in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He has taught many large classes with up to 294 students. In addition to teaching chemistry, Stephen supervises the supplemental instruction (SI) program for the Faculty of Science. SI offers structured study sessions for large first year science courses to help students succeed in their university careers.
Harold Weger is an associate professor in the Biology Dept. His research interests focus on algae and plants. He has taught Introductory Biology I (BIOL 100) many times over the years; this large first year “majors” course is taught in the Education Auditorium every Fall semester, and typically has 350 to 400 students. The course serves Biology students, Education students, Kinesiology students, Biochemistry students and students in a wide variety of Pre-Professional programs.
