Abstract:

B corporations are a new type of company that use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. Over 2500 B corps have been certified in 50 countries across 130 industries since 2007 and interest in these new organisational forms as a vehicle to measure and advance corporate social responsibility is growing rapidly. Observing this phenomenon, we introduce it as a field of study and develop a framework of prosocial venturing (business organising that encompasses a motivation for helping people and planet, rather than of pure self interest) that considers certification as significant to how opportunities are created and resist or embrace change over time. This offers new insights about the entrepreneurial process that points to the need for a better understanding among opportunities, motivations and identity (individual and organisational) when considering organisational strategies for start up, certification and beyond.
